Location & People

The Southern Ute Indian Tribe is located in southwestern Colorado, primarily within the Four Corners region. The Tribe’s jurisdiction spans a large, diverse landscape of mountains, plateaus, and canyons, offering a unique environment that blends both natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.

With over 1,400 enrolled members, the Southern Ute Tribe is deeply rooted in its ancestral lands, and its citizens continue to maintain strong cultural ties, thriving in both traditional and modern ways of life.

Resilience Through History

The Southern Ute people have lived in the Four Corners region for thousands of years, deeply connected to the land, wildlife, and natural resources. Their resilience was tested by colonization, forced relocation, and land encroachment, yet the Southern Ute Tribe persevered, becoming one of the most economically successful Native nations in the U.S.

Sovereignty & Self-Governance

The Tribe successfully navigated through the Indian Reorganization Act, reasserting control over its land and resources. Today, the Southern Ute Nation governs through a tribal council and upholds sovereignty in all matters of law, culture, and business.

Cultural Preservation

The Southern Ute Tribe preserves its language, traditions, and governance structures, ensuring that the values and teachings of their ancestors are passed down to future generations.

Strengthening Capacity, Expanding Opportunities

As with many tribal communities, the Southern Ute Tribe faces challenges related to rural connectivity, digital access, and the diversification of its economy. However, the Tribe’s forward-thinking leadership continues to invest in infrastructure, education, and workforce development as the foundation for future prosperity.
